Traditionally Halloween parties have included a few scary objects, random alcoholic beverages, and young ladies wearing clothing that would get them arrested for indecent exposure on nearly any other day of the year.
Despite the entertaining nature of the traditional Halloween party, there are other fiendishly delightful options to consider. On the one day of the year when the dead and the living are supposed to be the closest, why not celebrate with a little apocalyptic mayhem?
Zombies are a popular type of monster. They are essentially a fallen form of man, a creature lost to the hoard. The undead are also a lot of fun at parties. If you want to throw a unique Halloween party that your town has ever seen, consider scheduling the zombie apocalypse. For this horrific night to happen, you will need the following items:
1 - An old building/house that can be rented inexpensively or a house with a large backyard. (If you use an old building/house make sure it's safe and you get permits.)
2 - Paint ball guns and the associated safety equipment. Or, if you wish to scale down the event you can use a Velcro flag belt, like the ones used in flag football.
3- Make-up effects for zombie wounds, and people who wish to be zombies.
4- A fog machine and eerie background sounds.
Of course, if this is too much work or beyond your party budget, you can aways scale down the party to the bare minimum. Even a small bark-yard with limited props will be effective if planed right.
Trail of Terror
The actual party will take place at dusk or at night. It will also be a staging area for the evening's entertainment. Before the party begins set up an area that can be used as a trail of terror. The trail will be used as a transitional area for the event. The fog machine, if acquired, would be an excellent addition to this area of the event.
The group of surviving party guests will race down the trail while they are chased by zombies. Make certain that this area is clear of unnecessary debris. A few staged props such as broken tables and a few supposedly abandoned cars (made from cardboard) along the way might be a nice touch. You can also set up some gravestones along the way withe zombies crawling out and grabbing guest. However, since this event will be done at dusk/night it will be important to make certain that there is nothing to trip over.
Zombies will attack the guest. It is a good idea to have a few sacrificial guests lined up to be the first people to be taken. Their lively screams will sell the event to the people. While the dead are supposedly out devouring the formerly living guests, the rest of the party guests will be given a briefing on the battle plan. They must secure weapons that will be placed nearby. If there is a tool shed on the property that would be a perfect choice, however a patio table can be used as well.
The living party guests will have to make their way through a zombie infested trail that you set up in order to reach the paintball guns. Note: If you choose not to use paintball guns, you can equip each guest with a flag or flag belt like the ones used in flag football. The zombies will have flags as well. If the guest removes the zombie's flag first, they are safe (and the zombie is killed.) However, if the zombie removes the flag first, the guest is a goner. The event can continue from there. At this point it can devolve into a free for all where every party goer has to be out for themselves.
When the last zombie is destroyed or the final surviving party member is taken by the sweet grasp of fake unearth, it will be time to return to the party area. There will be snacks for everyone.
There are a few safety concerns to consider, however. Please make certain everyone knows about the situation before the party begins. It may be fun to spring this sort of thing on people, but there is no way to know how someone might react.
Further, if the paint ball guns are used then everyone will need to wear safety goggles. Yes, this even includes the zombies. The suspension of disbelief may be harder to maintain when the zombies wear safety gear, but unbelievable fictional zombies are much preferable to a factual personal injury lawsuit.
