Witch's Finger Recipe

These are always popular at Halloween and no wonder - these cookies are green and they have brown nails and you can even use red decorator gel for fake blood under some or all of the nails!

This recipe makes 28 large fingers. If you prefer to make small ones, you can use a teaspoon of dough for each one and then you will get double the amount. In the recipe, if you are using salted butter instead of the unsalted kind, only use 1/2 teaspoon of salt instead of a full teaspoon.

What You Need:

1 cup powdered sugar. 1 egg. 1 cup butter, at room temperature. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. 1 teaspoon almond extract. 1 teaspoon salt. 1 teaspoon baking powder. 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour. Green food coloring, as needed. 3/4 cup whole blanched almonds. Red decorator gel (optional).

How To Make Them:

These first thing to do is preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Beat the sugar, egg, butter, and vanilla and almond extracts together. Now mix in the salt, baking powder and flour. Add enough green food coloring to make the mixture green. You can make them pale green or dark green, as you prefer.

Cover and refrigerate this dough for half an hour. Now you can roll tablespoons of dough into finger shapes for each cookie, pressing an almond into the tip to make the nail. Press the dough so it comes out for the knuckle and make some lines using a toothpick or sharp knife. Arrange the fingers on parchment lined baking sheets or nonstick cooking spray-lined baking sheets, and bake then for 20 or 25 minutes, or until they are done. Let them cool for 3 minutes.

Now, if you want to add some grisly-looking 'blood' under the nails you can lift the almonds and squeeze a little red decorator gel under each one, pressing the almonds back after. Let them cool fully then serve these spooky cookies!
